As a Failure Analysis (FA) Manager, you will lead the Failure Analysis function responsible for diagnosing media-level defects and identifying the underlying physical root causes impacting product yield, reliability, and customer quality performance. You will manage a team of engineers and technicians, oversee laboratory operations, and drive investigations that bridge the gap between symptom detection and root cause identification. This role plays a critical part in connecting media manufacturing processes with hard disk drive (HDD) system performance. Working closely with R&D, Process Development, Manufacturing, and Customer Quality teams, you will translate complex analytical findings into actionable recommendations that improve product quality, manufacturing performance, and technology development. Key Responsibilities Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Failure Analysis engineers and technicians, ensuring technical excellence and capability growth. Manage laboratory operations, including analytical equipment utilisation, maintenance planning, calibration, safety compliance, and resource allocation. Lead in-depth investigations into media-related defects, including protrusions, pits, scratches, lubricant migration, corrosion, and other reliability-related failures. Drive root cause analysis activities for yield excursions, qualification failures, customer complaints, and reliability concerns using structured problem-solving methodologies. Oversee the use of advanced analytical and characterisation tools to identify defects at microstructural, chemical, magnetic, and atomic levels. Collaborate closely with Media Process Development teams to correlate failure analysis findings with process variables and manufacturing conditions. Act as the technical bridge between Media Engineering, HDD Integration, Manufacturing, and Customer Quality teams to address product and process issues. Establish and continuously improve investigation methodologies, best practices, and failure analysis standards. Analyse defect trends and reliability data to identify opportunities for yield improvement and risk reduction. Prepare and present technical findings, executive summaries, and strategic recommendations to management and stakeholders. Support new technology development, qualification programmes, and strategic R&D initiatives through advanced failure analysis expertise. Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned by management.
Education Master's Degree or PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline. Experience Minimum 8 years of experience within the HDD industry. At least 3 years of leadership or managerial experience leading technical or engineering teams. Proven experience in Failure Analysis, diagnostics, root cause investigation, and laboratory management. Experience supporting R&D, Process Engineering, Manufacturing, Reliability, or Customer Quality functions within a high-technology environment. Technical Skills (Must Have) Strong expertise in structured problem-solving methodologies such as 8D, FMEA, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and corrective action management. Deep understanding of media manufacturing processes, including: Thin-film deposition (Sputtering) Carbon overcoat technologies Lubricant chemistry Media substrate characteristics Surface topography and defect mechanisms Expert-level hands-on experience with advanced analytical tools, including: SEM/EDX FIB AFM XPS OSA Candela Zygo Optical Profiler Related characterisation techniques Strong knowledge of defect characterisation, contamination analysis, corrosion mechanisms, and failure physics. Ability to interpret complex analytical data and translate findings into actionable business and engineering recommendations. Strong technical report writing, presentation, and stakeholder communication skills. Technical Skills (Preferred) Knowledge of HDD channel physics, servo systems, head-disk interface (HDI), and magnetic recording technologies such as PMR and HAMR. Understanding of glass and aluminium substrate technologies. Experience with statistical analysis and data analytics tools such as: JMP Minitab Python Experience supporting customer quality investigations, reliability programmes, and product qualification activities. Proficiency in Japanese language would be an advantage. Personal Attributes Strong leadership, coaching, and people development capabilities. Highly analytical with a structured and data-driven approach to problem-solving. Strong persistence and attention to detail when investigating complex technical issues. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. Ability to influence and collaborate effectively across multiple engineering disciplines.
