As a Tribo Development Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, improving, and evaluating reliability test methodologies related to head-media interface (HMI) performance and HDD media reliability. You will analyse reliability testing results, correlate findings with head and media design parameters, and drive continuous improvements to meet evolving customer requirements. Working closely with R&D, Materials Science, Process Engineering, and Evaluation teams, you will lead root cause investigations, develop new test methodologies, and support the implementation of reliability assessment systems that improve product performance and quality. You will also play a key role in supporting laboratory operations, troubleshooting test equipment, and mentoring Engineering Assistants and Technicians. Key Responsibilities Conduct reliability testing and evaluation activities for HDD media and head-media interface performance. Analyse and summarise reliability test results, correlating findings with head and media design parameters. Investigate test failures and perform root cause analysis in collaboration with internal Materials Science and Failure Analysis teams. Improve existing reliability test methodologies to meet new customer requirements and technology roadmaps. Develop new test setups, test methodologies, and evaluation procedures for head-media interference and reliability assessment. Lead and support troubleshooting, calibration, maintenance, and optimisation of reliability test equipment. Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations based on test results and engineering evaluations. Supervise, coach, and provide technical guidance to Engineering Assistants and Technicians. Collaborate with global sites and cross-functional engineering teams to facilitate technical knowledge sharing and best practices. Ensure compliance with ISO procedures, laboratory standards, and company quality requirements. Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.
Education Bachelor's Degree or above in: Mechanical Engineering Chemical Engineering Materials Engineering Electrical Engineering Or related engineering disciplines. Experience Relevant working experience in reliability testing, product evaluation, tribology, HDD technology, materials engineering, semiconductor, or advanced manufacturing environments is strongly preferred. Experience in test method development, equipment troubleshooting, and engineering investigations will be advantageous. Experience supervising technicians, laboratory personnel, or junior engineers is beneficial for senior-level positions. Technical Skills (Must Have) Knowledge of material physics, surface interactions, and interface behaviour between materials. Understanding of chemistry and physics related to material interfaces and tribological performance. Basic knowledge of material characterisation and evaluation techniques. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to perform structured root cause investigations. Ability to analyse reliability test data and provide technical recommendations. Good technical report writing, presentation, and communication skills. Technical Skills (Good to Have) Understanding of HDD structures, head-media interface (HMI), and magnetic recording technology. Experience in reliability testing, durability testing, and qualification methodologies. Hands-on experience with troubleshooting, setup, and optimisation of engineering test equipment. Programming or scripting knowledge in: MATLAB LabVIEW Python Knowledge of statistical analysis and engineering data interpretation. Experience working in cleanroom environments.
