As an R&D Backend Engineer, you will design, develop, and qualify backend processes and programmes in accordance with customer and product requirements. You will support backend process development, hardware modifications, and process improvements to achieve robust product quality and reliability performance. You will work closely with R&D, Manufacturing, and Reliability teams to develop new processes, resolve technical challenges, and ensure the smooth transfer of process settings from development to manufacturing. You will also support future technology development through materials evaluation, lubricant-related activities, reliability testing, and data-driven process optimisation. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and qualify new backend processes and programmes according to customer, product, and technology requirements. Support backend process development activities, including process optimisation, hardware modification, and equipment improvement. Undertake new process development projects to support future product and technological requirements. Lead or participate in process improvement projects to resolve technical challenges during new product development and manufacturing stages. Analyse process performance, identify improvement opportunities, and implement sustainable corrective actions. Ensure the smooth transfer of process settings, specifications, and technical knowledge from the R&D team to the Manufacturing team. Work closely with the Reliability team to develop new evaluation methods and establish correlation with Spin Stand and HDD-level performance. Support lubricant development activities through materials evaluation, process experimentation, and data analysis. Apply statistical analysis and process control methods to evaluate experimental results, process capability, and manufacturing performance. Prepare technical reports, experimental findings, process specifications, presentations, and other relevant documentation. Provide technical guidance and support to Engineering Assistants and Technicians, where required. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support product qualification, process improvement, and manufacturing readiness. Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.
Education Bachelor’s Degree or above in one of the following disciplines: Mechanical Engineering Materials Science and Engineering Chemistry Physics Chemical Engineering Other related engineering or scientific disciplines Experience Fresh graduates are welcome to apply. Candidates with a few years of relevant experience in manufacturing, process engineering, materials development, product development, or R&D will have an advantage. Experience in HDD media, semiconductor, electronics, precision engineering, chemical processing, or advanced manufacturing environments is preferred. Experience in process development, product qualification, equipment improvement, or technology transfer will be advantageous. Technical Skills and Knowledge Good understanding of engineering fundamentals, materials science, chemistry, physics, or manufacturing processes. Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills. Ability to plan and execute experiments, analyse results, and translate findings into practical process improvements. Knowledge of process development, process optimisation, and manufacturing technology transfer. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for technical data analysis and reporting. Knowledge of statistical analysis, process capability, and Statistical Process Control. Experience with Minitab or similar statistical analysis software is preferred. Ability to prepare clear technical reports, presentations, process specifications, and work instructions. Good to Have Knowledge of lubricant development, including lubricant design, formulation, synthesis, or evaluation. Knowledge of materials science, surface science, tribology, or nanotribology. Experience with advanced data analysis and Statistical Process Control techniques. Understanding of HDD media manufacturing, Spin Stand evaluation, or HDD-level reliability testing. Experience in hardware modification, equipment improvement, or process automation. Familiarity with Design of Experiments and root cause analysis methodologies. Hands-on and willing to support process trials, equipment improvement, and manufacturing activities. Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
